New Work: ‘A’, The AkzoNobel Magazine
Angus Hyland and his team at Pentagram’s London office have designed ‘A’, the external company magazine of AkzoNobel, one of the world’s leading chemical companies. ‘A’ replaces ‘Matters’ as the AkzoNobel magazine and is the company’s means of communicating with its stakeholders worldwide. The refreshed editorial content provides a compelling look at the real world applications of coatings and chemicals technology, alongside AkzoNobel news bulletins, feature articles and in-depth reports on the big issues affecting the chemicals industry.
Hyland has recently completed his redesign of AkzoNobel’s corporate identity and has been retained as a branding consultant. ‘A’ is the latest installment in his ongoing work with the company.

‘A’ features striking editorial photography alongside a restrained, contemporary layout and typography. Vibrant colour, a key element of AkzoNobel’s identity, is used throughout in imagery and headings to complement the magazine’s measured use of white space. Coupled with the magazine’s small format and heavyweight paper stock, this gives ‘A’ a look and feel redolent of a quality periodical.
